RCM is UK's Greenest Conservatoire!

Yes – it’s official. The Royal College of Music has moved up the Green League 2010, achieving a meteoric rise to 22nd place – classified as a ‘first’ - from a disappointing 126th equal in 2009.  The Green League, promoted by People and Planet, aims to encourage universities to move towards a low-carbon future.

The RCM’s sustainable food policy, socially responsible investment policy and determined effort to make students and staff aware of their combined responsibility have contributed to this rapid improvement.

RCM Director Professor Colin Lawson commented: "We're not doing this for the Green League. These are all things that we think of as being very important," he adds. "The Green League is a catalyst, but we feel we've got a role to be responsible.  We are grateful to our Estates team for taking this forward so effectively. We look forward to climbing even higher up the Green League next year."

People & Planet is the largest, student network in campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment.  The People & Planet network consists of groups at Universities, Colleges and Schools, plus many other individual supporters, supported by an office staff team.

Other conservatoires ranked in the league include Guildhall School of Music and Drama at 113, and the Royal Academy of Music at 129. Full details of the league can be viewed on the People & Planet website.

Times Higher Education has also covered the story this week - a full version of the article can be found on the Times Higher Education website.
