Peter Brathwaite

Treble triumph for RCM singers

Peter Brathwaite has won the £10,000 Samuel Coleridge Taylor Award at the Black British Classical Foundation, VOBO (Voice of Black Opera) awards.

The new competition, set to take place every two years, is open to professional or final-year student singers of black and Asian heritage from across the Commonwealth. The highly distinguidhed jury for the inaugural competition included Maria Ewing, Grace Bumbry and Julian Joseph.

Peter, who studies at the RCM's International Opera School, won the award for the best performance of an opera aria written by a black composer. The award is named in honour of the composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor, the celebrated RCM alumnus.

Meanwhile in London, RCM singers took first and second place in the London Welsh Singer of the Year Competition. Baritone Sam Evans, who studies at the RCM's International Opera School, and Masters student soprano Rhian Evans made it yet another 1-2 finish for RCM singers, after a similar triumph at the recent Great Elm Vocal Awards.

Congratulations to them all.
