Vienna in South Kensington
The Royal College of Music is participating in one of 2009's most important cultural events."City of Dreams: Vienna 1900-1935" is a major project led by the Philharmonia Orchestra and their Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Taking place from February to October, the festival explores Viennese life during the period of Mahler, Schoenber and Berg, as well as Freud and Klimt. It encompasses a series of major orchestral concerts in 18 cities across across the UK and Europe, as well as chamber concerts, exhibitions, talks and study days.
The Royal College of Music is a major partner in the project. From March to October, we are presenting a number of chamber concerts that will complement the orchestral series. The concert provide the opportunity to explore the work of other Viennese composers such as Korngold, Zemlinksky and Webern, alongside other more popular forms of music such as waltzes and cabaret songs. In May, we also host a study day exploring the art and design of the period.
